HudsonAlpha Institute ( is a non-profit facility with the mission to use biotechnology and basic biological research to make important discoveries, improve human health, stimulate economic development and inspire young people to seek careers in science. Located in Cummings Research Park in Huntsville, Alabama, one of the world's leading science and technology business parks, the four-story, 270,000 square foot building contains state-of-the-art laboratories for biological research and development in the areas of genomics, genetics and personalized medicine.


The Clinical Services Laboratory (CSL) at HudsonAlpha is a premier provider of scientific support services to the international community.  With more than 5,000 projected genetic samples from around the world, the CSL is a central contributor to some of the most exciting and cutting-edge research programs around the world. 


The clinical informaticist will use bioinformatics and informatics technology in order to develop and maintain systems for a molecular diagnostics lab that performs next generation sequencing. This requires an appreciation of regulatory and compliance considerations as well as a desire to bring innovation and ingenuity to the challenge of working within that framework.

The clinical informaticist will:

  • Participate in data processing and quality control, including development of tools to facilitate process improvement
  • Work with the lab information management system
  • Contribute to the quality management and compliance programs, ensuring that lab processes comply with evolving standards.
  • Write standard operating procedures and manuals as needed.
  • Develop tools to process and analyze data in an accurate and reproducible way. 
  • Perform data mining and analysis as required.


Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in clinical informatics, bioinformatics, computational biology, biostatistics, computer science or related quantitative field; graduate degree a plus
  • Knowledge of current bioinformatics approaches, databases, information system with an emphasis on large-scale data sets.
  • Excellent programming skills
  • Strong understanding of statistics and next generation sequencing data generation and analysis, as demonstrated through previous work or academic experience
  • Experience with human genetics, next generation sequencing data, molecular diagnostics, or health informatics is an asset

Required Skills:

  • Excellent communication skills, demonstrating ability to understand objectives of clinical laboratory, regulatory and compliance topics
  • Meticulous attention to detail


The physical requirements and environmental conditions of this position consist primarily of:

  •       Continuous mental and visual attention, requiring sustained attention and observation
  •      Ability to work at a PC monitor for most of the work day
