INSTITUTE OVERVIEW

HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology is a non-profit facility with the mission to use biotechnology and basic biological research to make important discoveries, improve human health, stimulate economic development and inspire young people to seek careers in science. Located in Cummings Research Park in Huntsville, Alabama, one of the world's leading science and technology business parks, the four-story, 270,000 square foot building contains state-of-the-art laboratories for biological research and development in the areas of genomics, genetics and personalized medicine. 

LABORATORY OVERVIEW

The Swaminathan laboratory develops and applies functional genomics technologies to uncover genes whose activity is important for sustainable traits in crops. Projects range from building basic genomic resources for bioenergy feedstocks to using genomic, molecular and biotech tools to understand the molecular basis of traits like perennially, carbon partitioning habit and nutrient recycling in grasses like miscanthus, sugarcane and sorghum.

The laboratory is currently looking for an outstanding post-doctoral scientist interested in applying cutting edge synthetic biology and biotechnology tools to understand the function of nutrient responsive genes in Sorghum. The post-doc will also have the opportunity to work closely with a team of scientists interested in increasing the value of biomass crops by engineering them to produce high value products.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Post Doctoral researcher contributes to scientific discovery with the objective of publishing original manuscripts in influential scientific journals. The Post Doc Researcher has the opportunity to utilize the state-of-the-art technologies and shared support services of HudsonAlpha while pursuing research interests that directly contribute to or enhance the ongoing projects of the Institute.

The Post Doc:

  • Conducts and contributes to original research under the guidance of Faculty Investigator
  • Provides expertise in research program design, conduct and analysis
  • Prepares manuscripts and co-authors papers for publication in high-quality journals
  • Presents findings to the scientific community
  • Assists in the mentoring and teaching of research staff
  • Helps ensure that the research methods and ultimate work product are reflective of the highest scientific standards of integrity, quality and confidence
  • Exhibits curiosity and enthusiasm for discovery; embraces the ever-changing scientific environment
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Doctoral degree from accredited institution in crop biotechnology
  • Proficiency in grass transformation with a minimum of 2 years of experience with using cutting edge plant biotech tools to understand gene function and engineer pathways in monocots like sorghum
  • Basic molecular biology skills, including, designing and building constructs
  • A track record of high quality research work as evidenced by manuscript publication
  • The project requires expertise in plant developmental biology, physiology, genomics, biotechnology. Each member of the team brings a different set of experiences and skills to the table, so it is imperative that the postdoc has excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Experience advising on research methodology and analysis, as well as ability to interpret laboratory results and provide conclusions.
  • Demonstrated ability to advance projects, managing multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Excellent note keeping.
  • Proficiency with laboratory software, tools and equipment.
  • Ability to express oneself and put together manuscripts.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

The physical requirements and environmental conditions of this position consist primarily of:

  • Sustained standing and/or sitting.
  • Ability to carry out repetitive tasks that are part of certain high throughput molecular biology and biotechnology experiments
  • Continuous mental and visual attention, requiring sustained attention and observation
  • Ability to visually observe results and record outcomes via project software
  • Willingness to drive and travel long distances for field sampling and data collection throughout the year.
