INSTITUTE OVERVIEW                                         

HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology is a genomic science and applications nonprofit organization located in Huntsville, Alabama. It is a high-volume genomic data producer and a global scientific collaborator valued for genomic data analysis and interpretation to solve questions in cancer, undiagnosed childhood genomic disorders, neuro-psychiatric disorders, immune-mediated disease, agriculture and more. Its unique campus crosses the boundaries between scientists, educators, and commercial business to spark innovation and growth.


Educational Outreach is an essential component of the HudsonAlpha mission. The education and outreach programs of HudsonAlpha are organized around two guiding principles: preparing the future biotechnology workforce and cultivating an awareness of the influence of genetics and biotechnology on the lives of all citizens. The genetic counseling team at HudsonAlpha resides within the Educational Outreach department and leads the development and implementation of educational programs for clinical audiences as well as supports the clinical and research-based genetic counseling needs across HudsonAlpha.


The Genetic Counselor/Clinical Applications Specialist will join the current team of three genetic counselors at the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology. This position will include a combination of clinical genetic counseling, research genetic counseling, and educational activities.

This position will provide clinical genetic counseling at The Smith Family Clinic for Genomic Medicine, LLC alongside a board-certified medical geneticist. The Smith Family Clinic is a wholly-owned subsidiary of HudsonAlpha and a one-of-a-kind medical clinic devoted to the practice of genomic medicine.

This position will also provide support for clinical research projects at HudsonAlpha. Current projects include include Information is Power, a population screening program for inherited cancer risk, SouthSeq, an NIH-funded project exploring the use of whole genome sequencing in NICU nurseries across the deep south, and Insight, a research program looking at the use of elective whole genome sequencing. The genetic counseling team is heavily involved in these projects, among others, providing education and genetic counseling support to patients, healthcare providers, and the community.

The genetic counseling team at HudsonAlpha also provides education and training in genetics and genomics for healthcare providers as well as medical, nursing and genetic counseling trainees.

This position will work collaboratively with the genetic counseling team, and other HudsonAlpha team members, to provide high quality genetic counseling and educational project support. This is a full time (40 hours per week) position. This position is based at the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology in Huntsville, Alabama.


Education and Experience:

  • Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling
  • Board certification through the American Board of Genetic Counseling
  • May 2018 graduates are welcome to apply, with the expectation that board certification would be achieved at the first opportunity upon hire

Required Skills:

  • Able to provide clinical genetic counseling in a variety of patients and clinical scenarios
  • Proficient with common technology applications and their use
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal
  • Strong presentation skills, both the crafting and presentation of content to large and small audiences of varying types
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, timelines and deadlines
  • Attention to detail

Willing to comply with HudsonAlpha and Smith Family Clinic policies and procedures


  • Provides clinical genetic counseling for patients seen at The Smith Family Clinic for Genomic Medicine, LLC.
  • Provides genetic counseling and education support for HudsonAlpha research projects and initiatives.
  • Designs, develops and delivers learning opportunities for healthcare providers and trainees.
  • Communicates complex genetics and genomics concepts in a concise and understandable manner, both through written text and in conversation.
  • Works with multiple teams and on a variety of projects, within educational outreach and across other departments at HudsonAlpha and The Smith Family Clinic.
  • Presents experiences and project data at local, regional and national meetings.
  • Utilizes project management software to oversee details associated with genetic counseling projects and programs.


The physical requirements and environmental conditions of this position consist primarily of:

  • Minimal physical activity, with frequent computer use.
  • Extended periods of walking and standing will be required while providing patient care and during hosted events.
  • Must be able to transport materials required for various activities and events. This includes lifting and moving up to 25 lbs. of materials as well as between parking lots and buildings.
  • Working conditions are generally in an indoor office setting at HudsonAlpha and the adjacent Smith Family Clinic for Genomic Medicine, LLC.
  • Evening and extended hours may be periodically required as business dictates.
  • Periodic overnight travel to regional and national meetings, and some local travel, will be required.
