Located in Cummings Research Park in Huntsville, Alabama, one of the world's leading science and technology parks, HudsonAlpha's campus contains state-of-the-art laboratories for biological research and development, as well as education, in the areas of genomics, genetics and personalized medicine.



The Genomic Services Laboratory (GSL) at HudsonAlpha is a premier provider of scientific support services to the international community.  With more than 1,500 projects involving investigators from around the world, the GSL is a central contributor to some of the most exciting and cutting-edge research programs around the world.  The GSL has experienced continuous growth since its inception in 2009. We attribute our sustained growth even during a global recession to the daily contributions of the remarkable individuals who make up our team.



The software developer will work closely with at least one other developer and project manager to implement solutions which increase efficiency and productivity in a high-capacity sequencing laboratory while preventing routine errors.  The position will also utilize bioinformatics and informatics technology in order to develop and maintain systems for automated, continuous processing of high-throughput sequencing data.  The ideal candidate will be able to quickly learn and adapt to the rapidly-changing nature of the genomic sequencing field, and will utilize a variety of software development technologies and tools in order to design, develop, deploy, and update solutions to a variety of challenges.



The Software developer will:

  • Participate in data processing and quality control, including development of tools to facilitate process improvement
  • Extend the current Laboratory Information Management System as required by the needs of production staff
  • Document development efforts as needed.
  • Develop tools to process and analyze data in an accurate and reproducible way. 
  • Perform data mining and analysis as required.



Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in science, engineering, or technology field of study
  • Knowledge of current bioinformatics approaches, databases, and information systems with an emphasis on large-scale data sets
  • Development experience with modern server and client-side web frameworks and relational databases
  • Strong understanding of statistics and scientific laboratory processes
  • Experience with human genetics, next-generation sequencing data, molecular diagnostics, or health informatics is an asset

Required Skills:

  • Excellent communication skills, demonstrating ability to understand objectives of the clinical and research laboratories
  • Command-line Linux or MacOS
  • Meticulous attention to detail



The physical requirements and environmental conditions of this position consist primarily of:

  • Continuous mental and visual attention, requiring constant alertness or activity.
  • Ability to work at a PC monitor for most of the workday.
