The HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology ( is a non-profit organization with the mission to use biotechnology and basic biological research to make important discoveries, improve human health, stimulate economic development, inspire young people to seek careers in science and teach members of the public the importance of science in their everyday lives. Located in Cummings Research Park in Huntsville, Alabama, one of the world's leading science and technology parks, HudsonAlpha's campus contains state-of-the-art laboratories for biological research and development, as well as education, in the areas of genomics, genetics and personalized medicine.



The Facilities Maintenance Department provides all aspects of operational support for the HudsonAlpha campus, including maintenance of facilities; oversight of the shipping dock; janitorial services and common supplies; consultation on environmental health and safety; emergency preparation and 24 hour security and surveillance. The Department serves the needs of HudsonAlpha staff as well as the other tenants on campus.

As a research facility, the Institute houses laboratories with unique protocols as well as materials and equipment that require specific handling. The department accommodates varying requests while ensuring that overall standards for cleanliness and safety are maintained. It coordinates disaster preparation among tenants and arranges security as well as access for special events. The Department provides warehousing and distribution of common office supplies as well as shipping and receiving.



Facilities Technicians represent a cross-section of skilled trades and crafts capable of maintaining all routine aspects of the buildings and campus. No single common certification or registration is required. Rather, team members are assigned tasks via a work order system according to immediate needs. Staff may be given additional specialized assignments based on specific areas of expertise. In addition to core competencies, management may recruit for specialized skills to maintain a crew composition representing a variety of skilled trades.



  • General knowledge of mechanical equipment such as chillers, boilers, cooling towers, AHU's, air compressors, generators, pumps, exhaust fans, and refrigeration equipment
  • Provide regular maintenance throughout facility including bulb and ballast replacement, painting, sheetrock repair, ceiling and floor tile replacement, etc.
  • Perform minor repairs, troubleshooting, and adjustment of locks on cabinets, closets, doors and desks
  • Service kitchen appliances, sinks, toilets and emergency equipment, reporting mechanical malfunctions for further action
  • General carpentry and outdoor pest control (seasonal)
  • Move and assist in transportation of furniture and equipment
  • Assist with plumbing, electrical, and HVAC for installation of new equipment and relocating existing equipment
  • Respond to alarm calls during and after regular work hours
  • Work effectively with suppliers, internal customers, and contractors when necessary
  • Provide courteous and professional service to building occupants
  • Interpret building drawings/blueprints for electrical, HVAC and general construction
  • Responsible for maintaining PM's and work orders for assigned equipment and performing work in a timely manner



  • Two-year degree in a technical field (preferred)or equivalent combination of education and experience. High school diploma or GED equivalent(required)
  • Minimum two years' related experience in a position demonstrating the ability to complete assignments, work with limited supervision, and prioritize tasks according to a work schedule
  • Valid driver's license (DMV check required)
  • Ability to work within a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)
  • Ability to use various power and hand tools
  • Ability to identify and coordinate parts/equipment and estimate time required and cost for completion of tasks
  • Good verbal communication skills and ability to interact with a wide range of people
  • Experience reading and following instructions, both verbal and written
  • Experience working in a team and maintaining team member/customer relationships
  • Must be able to pass general aptitude test



  • Frequent to continuously lifting or moving materials up to 40 lbs.
  • Frequent standing, sitting and walking
  • Ability to use power and hand tools and operate a motor vehicle
  • Continuous mental and visual attention, requiring constant alertness or activity.
