INSTITUTE OVERVIEW

The HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology (www.hudsonalpha.org) is a non-profit organization with the mission to use biotechnology and basic biological research to make important discoveries, improve human health, stimulate economic development, inspire young people to seek careers in science and teach members of the public the importance of science in their everyday lives. Located in Cummings Research Park in Huntsville, Alabama, one of the world's leading science and technology parks, HudsonAlpha's campus contains state-of-the-art laboratories for biological research and development, as well as education, in the areas of genomics, genetics and personalized medicine.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Operations Department provides all aspects of operational support for the HudsonAlpha campus, including shipping and receiving dock, janitorial services, operation, maintenance and repair of facilities common supplies, environmental health and safety, security and surveillance.  The department accommodates varying requests while ensuring that overall standards for cleanliness, safety, and optimal operation are maintained.  The department serves the needs of HudsonAlpha staff as well as the other tenants on campus.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Environmental, Health, and Safety Manager reports to the Director of Operations and is responsible for all aspects of safety, health, environmental and security activities.  The EHS Manager will manage the EHS staff and contracted security personnel.  Duties and responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Develop and manage EHS and Security budgets
  • Develop and implement EHS policies and procedures
  • Responsible for all safety and environmental regulatory reporting, inspections and recordkeeping
  • Serve as liaison with regulatory agencies and insurance companies
  • Serve as technical resource for EHS and Security issues
  • Responsible for Worker's Compensation claim management
  • Coordinate projects and services with EHS and Security related outside contractors
  • Responsible for emergency response planning/execution
  • Provide EHS and Security input on new construction and renovation projects
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • BS in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related science/engineering degree
  • Certified Safety Professional or Certified Industrial Hygienist preferred
  • 10 years of progressive experience and responsibility in the EHS field
  • 5 years of experience in a management role
  • Experience working in a biotech research or university environment a plus
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to interact with a wide range of people
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills
  • Advanced computer skills, Mac experience preferred
  • Professional appearance and demeanor
  • Exceptional discretion in dealing with sensitive information
  • Ability to prioritize competing tasks

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

The physical requirements and environmental conditions of this position consist primarily of

  • Frequent to continuously lifting or moving materials that are 1 to 40 lbs.
  • Frequent standing, sitting, and walking
  • Ability to use power and hand tools and operate a motor vehicle
  • Continuous mental and visual attention, requiring constant alertness or activity.
