The HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology ( is a non-profit organization with the mission to use biotechnology and basic biological research to make important discoveries, improve human health, stimulate economic development, inspire young people to seek careers in science and teach members of the public the importance of science in their everyday lives. Located in Cummings Research Park in Huntsville, Alabama, one of the world's leading science and technology parks, HudsonAlpha's campus contains state-of-the-art laboratories for biological research and development, as well as education, in the areas of genomics, genetics and personalized medicine.


The Economic Development department's mission is to foster an environment conducive to successful start-ups and the transition of products and services to the market. This department is responsible for the recruitment, relocation, and expansion of start-up, early stage, and established biotech companies.  

The Economic Development department focuses its work externally on government affairs (local, regional, and national), economic affairs, community relations, and special events that will promote growth of the synergistic cluster of biotechnology talent on the HudsonAlpha Biotech Campus and in North Alabama.


Currently, the Institute is making strides toward true incubation programming and is seeking an experienced, driven individual to lead these efforts.

For the Entrepreneurship Program Lead to succeed in this position, he/she must have a deep understanding of incubating companies with industry best practices but also with a creative mindset that aligns with HudsonAlpha's unique ecosystem.

Further, the Entrepreneurship Program Lead must respect and value the importance of:

  • Genomics and the power it currently has as well as the boundless potential for the future;
  • Basic discovery within the scientific research process;
  • The need for the application of innovation through diagnostics, therapeutics and/or services; and
  • Genomic education and the necessary role it has not only in a knowledge-based workforce but also in every person's daily life.

Finally, the Entrepreneurship Program Lead must be committed to HudsonAlpha's overarching goal of maximizing genomics to improve human health and well being by creating an intersection between research, education, entrepreneurship and medicine.


  • Lead efforts on the execution of HudsonAlpha's incubation efforts
  • Evaluate and provide evidence-based recommendations for specific incubation programming
  • Identify specific incubation programs that would advance existing efforts, meet unmet needs and position for entrepreneur/startup recruitment
  • Collaboratively prioritize programming based on companies presently on campus, targets within specific sectors, budgetary limitations and near- and long-term pathways for success.
  • Work with members of the Economic Development Department to understand the associate company growth efforts currently underway
  • Track and follow trends of life sciences/biotech incubators in the U.S. and beyond
  • Negotiate key points of importance to the Institute and the prospective entrepreneur
  • Document ideas and actions of strategy and tactics for setting goals and measuring success
  • Establish a life sciences incubator that is sought after by entrepreneurs beyond the regional borders
  • Strengthen HudsonAlpha's entrepreneurship and recruitment efforts through life sciences business incubation
  • Provide valued resources to entrepreneurs across the Institute generally and also to those with specific incubation needs


This position will be the first of it's kind at HudsonAlpha and as such, flexibility will be needed to begin with these responsibilities and goals and work collaboratively with others within the Institute for long-term success.

At the outset, the overarching goals are as follows:

  • Combining personal and professional experience, incubation best practices and the HudsonAlpha model for entrepreneurs and start up companies, the person in this position will craft a strategy for the Institute's incubation efforts.
  • Specifically, the daily work includes, but is not limited to, the points below, understanding that these will evolve with the needs of the Institute.


Additional responsibilities:

  • Participate in decision making process and related work within the Economic Development Department
  • Offer input on market studies and the development of marketing strategies
  • Represent the Department/Institute in multiple settings, including conferences, trade shows and forums


To thrive in this position, the selected person must have a respect and understanding for entrepreneurs; what is required for start-ups to succeed; and the ability to counsel and guide people of different motivations and backgrounds. Relevant items for this position include: 

  • Bachelor's degree in business related field (e.g., economics, finance, management, marketing, entrepreneurship, etc.) Advanced degree preferred.
  • An optimum mixture of the following professional experience: 
    • Two-plus years experience working in incubation programs (as part of program delivery or as entrepreneur)
    • Three-plus years as a principal in a start-up company
    • Three-plus years experience in biotechnology industry
    • Five-plus years working in other business sectors.
  • Compelling and effective communicator (verbal/written)
  • Charismatic presenter to inform and persuade audiences of various sizes, backgrounds and training
  • Strong ability to use and develop budgets, proforma financial statements, cash flow projections and other financial instruments.
  • Experience in navigating intellectual property (patent, copyright, trademark, etc.) pathway
  • Adept in assembling teams in a start up environment
  • Strong strategic planning skills with ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals.
  • Experience with and commitment to tracking prospects through CRM software
  • Ability to competently and confidently discuss topics related to HudsonAlpha's mission areas
  • Confidence and ease with networking in a variety of settings with people of diverse backgrounds
  • Comfortably work in a nimble, dynamic environment where priorities change to support the Institute's goals.


The physical requirements and environmental conditions of this position consist primarily of:

  • Frequently to Continuously lifting or moving materials that are 5lbs to 60lbs.
  • Frequent standing, sitting and walking
  • Continuous mental and visual attention requiring constant alertness or activity.
  • Evening and extended hours may periodically be required as projects dictate
  • Periodic travel across the country to support national outreach efforts and for individual professional development opportunities
